The team at Arrowhead Clubhouse embraced the "unmasking mental health" theme of Mental Health Week, May 5 to 11.

Arrowhead Clubhouse is hosting an open house and barbecue next Thursday, to coincide with Mental Health Week, which runs May 5 to 11.

Arrowhead Clubhouse is a place where people living with mental illness on the Sunshine Coast can go to learn skills, get support and build relationships in a safe, stigma-free environment.

The Clubhouse is an inclusive community where individuals “find encouragement, opportunities and, most importantly, a sense of ownership and belonging.”

Arrowhead project lead Foye Hatton, explains the theme of Mental Health Week this year is “unmasking mental health,” with an aim to encourage people to look beyond the surface and see the whole person.

To mark the week, Arrowhead is opening its doors and inviting family, friends, neighbours and community partners to drop in and find out a little bit more about what they do at the Clubhouse.

“Living with a mental health challenges is hard enough, masking can make it even harder,” says Hatton. “Living with mental health challenges often forces people to hide behind a mask to protect themselves from judgment and discrimination. But the heavier the stigma, the heavier the mask becomes and the more isolated we feel.”

Hatton says the Clubhouse team enjoys “throwing open the doors to this amazing community.”

“Pop in for a tour, a delicious free lunch and to help us break down stigma and unmask the mental health challenges so many of us live with,” he said.

The open house runs from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., May 8. The Clubhouse is located at 5554 Inlet Rd. in Sechelt.
